Family

The family is an important foundation of Italian society and provides emotional and economic support to the individual. The rural parts of Italy are often more family-orientated. It is not unusual for the immediate family and extended family to live together and maintain close relationships. Preoccupation with bella figura has meant that some Italian families hide any drama or internal conflict from the public eye to save themselves from shame or embarrassment. However, this concern is becoming less significant in modern Italy.

In the North and particularly in larger cities, people are more individualistic and focus on personal fulfilment. The family still plays an important role in creating social cohesion and a sense of belonging, but it is more common for non-traditional family values to be embraced. Furthermore, throughout all of Italy, one parent is often unavailable during the week due to commuting long distances for work.

The elderly are deeply respected in families. The father is often the family patriarch in rural areas; however, today there is little gender role inequality in family duties. Italian women strive to be some of the most independent.

Marriage and Dating
Dating customs in Italy are similar to those in Australia. Marriage is a very respected convention in Italian society, especially among devout Christians. Ceremonies usually follow Roman Catholic traditions. Under Italian law, a couple must be legally separated for three years before a divorce can be granted.
